A two-time Oscar winner for best director, Lean is best known for his films Great Expectations, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and A Passage to India. Sir David Lean was born in Surrey, England, on March 25, 1908 to Helena and Francis Lean who were Quakers. He wasn’t an especially good student. However, at age 10, his uncle gave him a Brownie box camera which Lean loved and would spend a great deal of time printing and developing the film.
